Suggestions on how to make a baby gate taller?

We have a ~ 3ft tall baby gate we want to use for our dogs that we bought- it was the tallest we could find w/o getting too expensive but one of our italian greyhounds (they are small dogs incase you haven’t heard of them) can jump this at a stand still. The only option is to make it taller- somehow. I suggested to my husband drilling holes and placing wooden dowels in the drilled holes (since it is a wooden gate) but do any of you have any better ideas?
We also can’t raise the gait since that would provide a crawl space for them below.
Omiting the gate all together could be an option, but I hate to crate them for long periods of time (over 3 hours) and we won’t allow them to run free while we’re gone because our oldest ig would destroy the new carpet and new furniture with her active little mouth.

I have the same problem as you. I’ve got short chubby basset hounds though. Shoot, you’d think they’d trip just walking over a shoe in the floor, but nope, they can jump these gates at a stand still. I also have the 3 foot baby gates, several of them actually. What I do, is I raise mine as far as I can, that won’t allow them to get under the gate. I’ve also doubled up on the gates, blocking off the entire doorway. Another thing that I do, is too scoot 2 kitchen table chairs against the gate, with the backs against the gate. The backs of the chairs act like a wall. You could also raise the gate and put something heavy and stationery under it, so that they can’t get under.
